The Ideal Rainy Day

It’s been raining in NYC a lot lately, which has not been the most convenient being that a good portion of my commute is on foot. It probably goes without saying that most of us would much prefer a sunny, 75º day over 55ºand rainy. There is just a lot more that you can do when it it’s a nice day, right?

However true that may be, there are a few things about a rainy (or snowy!) day that I just love. Rainy days off give us permission to stay inside all day, watching movies, baking delicious creations, and reading a good book.

With that said, I bring you my ideal NYC rainy day.

10:00 am: No alarm was set today, it’s Saturday after all! I am woken up by the soft pitter-patter of rain outside my window. The room is cool, dark, and I am very cozy. After laying in bed for a few more minutes. I roll out and throw on a comfy sweatshirt and socks.

10:10 am: Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. Regardless of the weather, this is certainly a must. BUT, on a rainy day, a hot cup of heaven is the only way to start the day off right. I brew a delicious carafe of Cafe Verona and pour it lovingly (I know, but I really do adore my coffee) into my French bulldog mug. Top that off with a little cinnamon and we are good to go. I’ll also probably make myself a nice late breakfast. One of my favorites is homemade oatmeal. I like to cook it on the stove with almond milk, add cinnamon, walnuts, raisins, and a little granola. It’s the perfect thing on a rainy morning.

10:15 am: I burrow into the corner of our sectional, placing my coffee on the windowsill until it is just the right temperature. My husband and I then decide on a TV show to watch while we enjoy our morning. Lately, we have been watching Castle Rock on Hulu — seriously good, but only if you aren’t opposed to a little gore and a few jump-scares.

12:00 pm: For me, the ideal rainy day is not complete without some comfort food. Lately, I have really been wanting to make a chili in the Crockpot. Around lunchtime, I will start the process so that it has plenty of time to cook for the rest of the day. I have saved a few recipes on Pinterest. This vegetarian chili looks especially delicious!

1:00 pm: In order to maintain my day of coziness and self-care, doing a little home-spa is the perfect next step. I like to especially pay close attention to my skin, giving it a chance to be really well cleansed, exfoliated, and moisturized. I have been using this L’Oreal mud mask for about a year now and its lovely. The smell is really fresh and my skin feels clean but now too stripped of moisture after use. I’ll usually follow up with a basic moisturizer, nothing too crazy as my skin is a tad sensitive. I have been loving this one from La Roche Posay. It’s super plain but rich enough that my skin feels nice and replenished. I finish my spa session by painting my nails and sipping on a cup of lemon-ginger tea!

2:30 pm: As it is currently October, my husband and I are very much looking forward to watching a few of the Halloween classics. Here are a few spooky/not scary flicks on our list!

  • Ghostbusters
  • Hocus Pocus (duh)
  • Nightmare Before Christmas (neither of us has ever seen it!)
  • Halloweentown (my husband does not know this one is on my list, but we are SO watching it!)

But really any movie you choose is the perfect way to spend your rainy day afternoon! Don’t forget the snacks– my favorite movie snack is definitely Chex Mix.

6:00 pm: After an afternoon of movie watching, snuggling on the couch, and perhaps taking a sneaky nap, I am ready for a warming dinner. The chili is ready and filling the apartment with the most incredible aroma. You could top it off with a little cheese, sour cream, or avocado – yum!

After dinner, I clean up, take a hot shower, and put on my most comfy pajamas. It’s early enough to sneak in another movie, Facetime with my mom, and get into bed with a good book. (I just finished reading The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn, very suspenseful and I highly recommend!)

You may say that my day was extremely lazy, and yes that is probably true. But as I alluded to in my last post about being productive, it’s important that we do give ourselves these little breaks every so often. I hope that this post has inspired you to live out your cozy, rainy day dreams! Enjoy!
